To those asking about the masks:
We have high levels of community spread across the US
And flying=hrs in closed minimally ventilated spaces with lots of people
So 'til we get vaccines in more arms, better to be safe. Looking fwd to the day when we can all breathe easy again.
You get SARS-CoV-2 by inhaling it or direct or indirect contact. That means:
-Avoid gatherings outside your household
-Avoid enclosed spaces
-Ventilate if possible
-Disinfect high-touch surfaces
-Get vaccinated when you can
@kprather88@SaskiaPopescu@angie_rasmussen Health communication to the general public is very challenging. Scientists Taking the medium ambiguous ground has led to the public taking fewer precautions during this pandemic. Everyone should have access to fitted non medical n95s.
Decision analytical model finds more than half of #COVID19 cases are spread from people without symptoms, highlighting the importance of mask wearing, staying 6ft away from others, hand hygiene, and testing select people without symptoms @CDCgov. https://t.co/1VIRUfb47m
- 31% of the patients experienced altered mental status, and 49% (half!) of the patients with altered mental status were younger than 60!
- 5% of the patients experienced damage to the nerves, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome.

There is no evidence that I'm aware of that the same simple public health measures - masking, distancing, avoiding indoor gatherings - will not work on more transmissible strains.
Messaging should be consistent and there is reason to be hopeful. We can prevent transmission.
7/In contrast to other mode of transmission where virus hits nasal cavity and finds its way into lungs, aerosols can directly attacks alveolar cells, causing lung flooding, and respiratory failure - Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS): https://t.co/bEcnVXRJ9H 7/8 https://t.co/rxkopTxUsK
It is critical to increase genomic surveillance to track viral evolution & implement risk mitigation strategies to stay in front of the virus. Public-Private partnerships are essential for speed & rapid global sharing of data. https://t.co/VY1bypwhVs
The Biden Administration's plan released yesterday embraces comprehensive genomic surveillance as a necessary part to ending the pandemic. Our model supports sampling 5% of positive samples will detect variants of concern at a prevalence of 0.1% - 1.0%
Where are the N95s for ALL & early, outpatient treatments in US a full year into a deadly, airborne pandemic?? It’s madness that we have neither! Other countries do! We ensured maximum death by lacking all basic, common-sense policies! I am out of words for the horror I feel. https://t.co/9ltv3YdOBe
📌CDC REPORT: Increased transmissibility of B.1.1.7 variant warrants rigorous public health strategies. Universal use & increased compliance with mitigation measures and vaccination are crucial to reduce new cases and deaths substantially in coming months.
More than 38,000 Americans have died of Covid-19 in the first two weeks of the new year.
Another 92,000 are projected to die from the virus over roughly the next three weeks, according to an ensemble forecast published by the CDC. https://t.co/l0HEmdw9r3
